Further Information
Here you can find the background information of why and how I am where I am today. It also shows how and when this competition became a thing. In addition to this and the many debates Angel and I have previously had, there are links and articles that are evidence and backup to my side of the argument. In other words, more information to prove Angel wrong :).
How it Began
Growing up, academics have been a high standard for both me and my parents. Instead of getting by with passing grades, I pushed myself to do better than average and give all I had. Maintaining the status of a straight A student, I was frustrated by the little efforts my peers put into their education. It was very isolating and disappointing, and I was ready for the next step- the next challenge. In 2017 I was faced with that challenge called Early College Academy. This program is a two year program that allows high school students to attend Butler Community College as a full time student, and in result graduate with their Associates at the same time they graduate high school. This was an opportunity that I could not pass up. It would not only give me a chance to get ahead and challenge me further, but it would also teach me many important lessons as well as introduce me to several important people into my life.
It was hard at first, being a shy student who didn't know anybody. I continued to focus strictly on school, and watched how the other Academy students put little effort into their learning. It was frustrating and isolating to be solo in focus as well as responsibility. As the first semester progressed I warmed up to my peers, but I was disappointed that I was not entirely surrounded by the peers I thought I would be surrounded by. Going into this program, I was excited to finally be surrounded by other students who wanted the same challenge as I did and took their academics as seriously as I did; however, this wasn't the case. In fact, there were only a few exceptions that I eventually found. One thing I would learn that first year was the fact that everything happens for a reason, and little did I know the friends and peers I would meet who would have such a huge impact on my life. Here is when the competition comes into hand.
It wasn't until second semester that I really interacted with Angel. He was in a different Academy and I assumed he thought I was just another high school student just trying to get by. However, as time progressed and more conversations happened, there was a share of academic responsibility. By both of us being competitive it was a perfect idea to see who could out do the other. Rules and criteria were made, and thus the competition was born. The goal was to have the highest grades by the end of the semester. Other contenders included certifications and other opportunities. Whoever lost the competition would have to pay for dinner. Unfortunately, Calculus was my only B, but it cost me the competition (even though I don't think it should count being I was just then taking Algebra 2).
Overall, I am glad I made the decision to do the Academy. I wasn't sure at first, but I soon figured out that it was just the beginning for me. The academy allowed me to challenge myself, and become close to someone who challenges, helps, listens, and entertains me. As I stated, everything happens for a reason, and this competition and friendship was a result of this opportunity. We have both learned a great deal from each other, and although I lost the competition last semester (barely), I am not planning on buying the dinner this time.
